Environmental Manager thoughts

ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGER
*“Silent Spring”
Is a book written by Rachel Carson, that she had publish after several attempts of articles in several magazines about the negative consequences that DDT has. She published the book with the purpose of informing people about the serious consequences that DDT brings. It has not only kill animals and plants but it has also contaminates our own food supplied. (Silent Spring Summary, 2011).

 *Chernobyl Accident

The Chernobyl accident took place in Ukraine on April 1986. It occurred due to poor trained personal. The explosion released 5% of the radioactive reactor core into the atmosphere, over half of it was from biologically inert noble gases. 28 people died as a result of the radioactive reactions. The accident occurred due to a test for new voltage regulator designs. It caused the largest radioactive release into the environment. (Chernobyl, 2012)

*Bhopal
Bhopal is referred a disaster that happened in India which was due to a gas leak. It was named the Bhopal Gas Tragedy, because it is known as the world´s industrial disaster. This disaster happened in a pesticide plant in India called Union Carbide India Limited where ʺover 500,000 people were exposed to methyl isocyanate gas and other chemicals.ʺ (Varma, 2005). As well this lead to the killing thousands of people in the surroundings of the industry and ill people due to the release of the Methyl Isocyanate released. This incident has left traces of gas until these days and has affected people for a long period of time. (BBC News, 2009)

ANALYSIS

As environmental managers we believe that the publishing of the book “Silence Spring” by Rachel Carson brought positive public awareness because it lets people understand and be informed of the harm and bad consequences that the use of DDT brings. However we believe that this book is a waste of paper and materials that pollute the planet harming its environment, while it could be done through another source of media. We do consider the economy in the world important but our future and health keep as alive. What would it be of our economy if we didn’t have the health and a planet for our future? If for example during the Bhopal disaster 63% of its population that result in 895000 people were exposed to gas meaning that health care awareness might have increased. Therefore create employment for health care, but still generating unnecessary expenses.  On the other graph we can observe that even though during the Bhopal disaster Indian population didn’t get enough awareness of the problem of energy consumption. Around 50.9% of coal and 34.4% of petroleum are consumed by Indian people meaning that levels of contamination are still high. We as environmental managers are totally disappoint of this country’s (India) behavior since even though they have experience a disaster they’re level of contamination has continued to increase.
Therefore if people will be using this type of nuclear material they should be well trained in order to prevent this kind of disasters. This disaster ruined our future in the planet; these accidents happen just for a couple of hours but last a lifetime on the planet harming the humans every day. We only have one planet therefore we should take care of it instead of looking for more energy such as the nuclear plants and use what we have. We should consider using alternative sources of energy that are safer and pollute less.

  1. very nice girls! lets see what the soft ecologists and the cornucopians have to say about this!
Silent spring is not only about wasting paper. Need to consider if their public awareness is pos. or neg. This part you failed to mention
